NBC News recently profiled Elyse Barletta, a 27-year-old nanny from North Carolina. After graduating from American University in Washington, D.C., she looked for jobs for in her chosen field of nonprofit work, but could not find a position that truly suited her interests. Barletta, who had worked as a part-time nanny as a student, decided that it would be a good idea to try her hand as a full-time nanny. She currently cares for a 9-month-old girl and has no regrets about her decision.
“I have patience for kids,” Barletta said to NBC. “I love it.”
It’s important to note, however, that a college degree is not the only qualification one needs to be a good nanny. For some families, extensive childcare experience is just as important. Michelle LaRowe, a Houston, Texas professional who connects nannies with parents, told NBC that many educated people tried to break into the industry with little success after the economic downturn.
“They thought, ‘I have a degree in business. Anybody can take care of kids,'” LaRowe told the source. “They found out really quickly that wasn’t the case because the agencies wouldn’t work with them without prior experience.” She noted that the most successful college-educated applicants are those who had babysitting or nanny jobs while they were in college.
