Nanny Tips

4 ways to help your child get used to a nanny: Part Two

Before parents hire a nanny, there are a few things that need to be done. If their children have never been watched by a nanny, they may not be completely on board with the idea. They may not be comfortable having a new caretaker around the house. In the final part of our two-part series, we explore a couple more ways to make the transition easy for children.

1. Set guidelines with the caregiver

Prior to hiring a nanny, parents should meet with her to discuss everything from their needs to how the nanny normally operates. They need to remember this isn't the first time she's watched children, so by now she's likely established her own routine. Parents need to make sure this routine works for them and make any adjustments as needed.

This meeting is also a great time for the nanny to ask questions about the children, so she can plan the best way to take care of them.

2. Make a schedule of activities

To make the transition easy for children, parents should make sure their new nanny has created a full schedule of things that need to be done throughout the day. This schedule could actually mimic that of the parents, which would further help the kids get used to having a different adult around. This schedule, for example, could include dropping the kids off at school in the morning, picking them up from practice and making them dinner.
