Caregiver Services

4 qualities of a great caregiver

If your parents are getting older and you feel uncomfortable with them being by themselves during the day, consider hiring a caregiver. Caregivers are not only trained to take care of the elderly, but they will also become a good friend, listening to their stories, playing games and watching TV.

Here are four characteristics to look for in a caregiver:

1. Patience

There may be times when an elderly person falls asleep or simply wants to watch TV. They may also want to talk for a long while. A caregiver must be patient in these situations.

2. Reliability

If your caregiver is late by even five minutes, that could mean the difference between an elderly person with dementia feeling safe or lost and confused. A caregiver should not only be on time, but 10 to 15 minutes early just to ensure there are no gaps in the schedule.

3. Brave

Caregivers have to be ready to do things they may not normally be used to. They may have to clean up spills or help the elderly change into their favorite clothes. They may have to help feed or wash them. Caregivers have to be ok with stepping out of their comfort zone.

4. Similar interests

While it's not completely vital that a caregiver has the same interests as an elderly person, it certainly makes the day flow a little smoother. If a person loves football, try to find a caregiver who also enjoys watching his favorite team take the gridiron. Common interests will help them also feel more comfortable.
