Nanny Tips

3 mistakes families make when bringing in a new nanny

The following tips apply to families who are hiring a nanny for the first time or are looking to find a new nanny. Avoiding these mistakes will make the experience of working with a nanny more enjoyable.

1. Using a bland job description
When using a staffing agency, you won't have to worry about posting your own job description online. The agency will do this for you. However, you still need to give the company information about the type of nanny you're looking for and what your expectations are. This will help the agency match your family with the most qualified professional.

2. Poorly designing an  interview
Families need to have more than just a casual talk with nannies who are presented to them.  They need to have a well thought out plan going into the interview. This could mean scheduling time to have the nanny meet with all family members. And, while we're at it, if the family has a dog, it would be a good idea to introduce the nanny to your pet. You'll need to make sure she's comfortable around animals.

Unfortunately, many families rely solely on the staffing agency to vet candidates and gather information. And while a great agency does an outstanding job of doing this, it's only one step in the interview process. It's ultimately up to families to ensure the nanny is a good fit.

3. Having unrealistic expectations
If you're hiring a nanny for the first time, it's going to be a little more difficult than normal to set expectations. For example, how much work is too much work to provide them? Does a nanny clean, cook food, act as a chauffeur, and wash clothes and dishes? And when we talk about cleaning, are we talking about sweeping up after the kids eat or buffing the dining room floor?

Exactly! It's important to set realistic expectations for the nanny. Doing so will ensure they enjoy their jobs and can do them well.
