How to network over the holidays

Holiday parties are more than just an excuse to drink eggnog and eat fruit cake, as these gatherings can also help benefit your career. If you're searching for a job, you may think that trying to find a new position over the holidays is like looking for a needle in a haystack. However, holiday parties are a great way to network and will set you up for success in the New Year. Take a look at some of these helpful holiday networking tips:

  • Attend industry parties: "Set a goal to meet, connect with and learn from three to five people at an event," Andrea Nierenberg, a New York City-based speaker and trainer and author of Million Dollar Networking, tells Monster.com. "Do your research before going so you know something about those you might meet." If you're in the domestic services industry, seek out professional networks tailored to your career, like the Professional Chef Network, which hosts events all year round.
  • Reach out to family members: Even family parties can provide great networking opportunities. Your great aunt's neighbor may be in need of a personal chef or nanny for her children!
  • Send cards: Sending holiday cards is a great way to reconnect with former colleagues or strengthen relationships with those in your industry. If you didn't have time to send Christmas cards this year, don't worry. Sending a thoughtful note to wish coworkers or friends "Happy New Year" is another way to stay in touch.
