Did you know that today is Pi Day?
"Every year math enthusiasts celebrate pi, a celebrity among mathematical constants, on March 14 (3/14), also known as Pi Day," writes the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). "Pi is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Whatever the size of a circle, if you divide its circumference by its diameter you will always get 3.14159…, better known as pi."
Celebrating the holiday is a great way to engage the children you nanny for while teaching them about the importance of math. If you're looking for some fun ways to honor the occasion, take a look at our suggestions:
- Arts and crafts: Since pi is related to a circle, why don't you engage in circle-themed arts and crafts with the kids? Paper plates are a great way to incorporate this shape into your activity. Have the kids decorate the plates by using glitter glue, stickers markers and more. Urge them to use their creativity!
- Bake a pie: Who doesn't love pie? Indulge your sweet tooth by baking a tasty pie with the kids. You can choose an array of different types of desserts ranging from apple pie to pumpkin or chocolate mousse pie (a kid-friendly favorite). Let the little ones help you measure ingredients and decorate the pies when they cool.
- Play outside: When you think of circle the first thing that comes to mind is probably a basketball. Bring the kids outside and play four square or a similar game.
