Potential nannies: Making the most of your skills and qualifications

If you're a nanny in New York City, you know that the competition for jobs can be tight. Even if you have a few years of solid experience, competing with someone who has been working longer can be intimidating. How do you set yourself above other top candidates? We offer the following suggestions:

References

If you're working with a domestic staffing agency, then you have probably submitted references related to your previous childcare experience. You should consider adding references from people from other areas of your life. Recommendations from former volunteer supervisors or employers from different sectors can give a family a better picture of your trustworthiness, motivation for working and your interpersonal skills.

Education

Former teachers and people with degrees in early childhood education sometimes don't realize that they may have a very unique set of skills compared to other applicants. Many parents are looking for nannies who not only care for their children, but educate them as well. During your interviews remember to emphasize how your work in the classroom has prepared you for the position.

Certifications

Every potential nanny should at least be certified in CPR and first aid. You should also regularly take refresher courses even when you are not working as a nanny. Not only do they keep your skills up, but these classes also show an employer that you are serious about keeping children safe.

Interests

Many job applicants think that their hobbies or side interests are irrelevant to a potential employer, but they could be wrong. If you are a proficient musician, know how to sail or ride horses, you should mention it in an interview. Some parents are looking for nannies who can engage their children in unique ways.

If you are a nanny looking to employ your skills in a meaningful position, consider applying through Colonial Domestic Agency. Our counselors work hard to place experienced candidates with top employers.
