Television’s greatest nanny, Ann B. Davis, passes away

Ann B. Davis, the actress who portrayed The Brady Bunch's beloved housekeeper Alice, recently passed away at age 88. Davis was residing at the San Antonio University hospital at the time of her death.

Davis is best known for her role as Alice, the lively live-in housekeeper on The Brady Bunch. However, she was also an accomplished television comedian, appearing on The Bob Cummings Show, on which she played Charmaine "Schultzy" Schultz and earned two Emmys. Davis was recognized with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1960. She also published a cookbook, "Alice's Brady Bunch Cookbook," in 1994.

Taking her role as Alice seriously, Davis even created her own background story for Alice, helping her fit in with the Brady's in a more authentic way.

"I made up a background story. I did have a twin sister, so I used that as a basis," Davis said of the role in an interview with the Archive of America Television in 2004. "I cared very much about this family. It was my family. It was close to my family as Alice would ever get. I would have died for any single one of them at any point."

As Alice, Davis brought media attention to the role that nannies and housekeepers take in the raising of children, not just in celebrity homes but those of normal families as well.
