Can wearing your favorite color to a job interview influence your success? According to a new survey from CareerBuilder, which asked more than 2,000 hiring managers about what to wear on job interviews, it can. As a follow-up to yesterday's blog—where we suggested that you take advantage of the holiday sales to revamp your interview wardrobe—we'll spell out the keys to a polished and professional look. Take a look at a few tips below:
- Find the right fit: Even if you've spent a lot of money on a business suit, if it doesn't fit right it can look very sloppy. Showcase your professionalism by tailoring your suit and ensuring that your clothing is not too tight or too baggy.
- Skip distracting accessories: Strong-scented perfume, loud-patterned ties and oversized jewelry can all be distracting. Limit your accessories when you're going for an important job interview. It is perfectly fine to show your flair with a lucky trinket, just make sure that this jewelry piece or accessory is subtle. After all, you want the HR professional to focus on your skills, rather than your outfit.
- Stick to neutrals: "You can't go wrong with navy, black, brown or gray," Jule Gamache, writer for consultancy website ComeRecommended.com, says. "Wear a suit or blazer in one of these colors and pair it with a classic white button-down shirt. Depending on the company where you're interviewing, you might also be able to get away with a more vibrantly colored shirt instead of white. Use your best judgment." According to the survey, the best colors to wear for a job interview are black or blue. On the other hand, recruiters agreed that orange was the worst, since it appears a bit unprofessional.
